முதுமை, வயது என்ற எல்லையை கடந்து, இந்த பூவுலகிலேயே ஒரு அமரத்துவம் பெற்று விடுகிறது. பெரும்பாலோர் ஓய்வு பெற்றதுமல்லாமல், கடமைகளிலிருந்தும் விடுதலை பெற்றவர்கள். நோய் நொடி படுத்தினாலும், பொதுவாக எல்லாரும் ஒருவாறு சமாளித்துவிடுகிறார்கள். சிலருக்கு ஆலயம் செல்வது சாலவும் நன்று. மற்றும் சிலருக்கு தொல்லைக்காட்சி ஒரு டைம் பாஸ். அரசியல் இருக்கும் வரை, மதாபிமானங்கள்/அவமதிப்புகள் இருக்கும் வரை பட்டிமன்றங்களுக்கு நீடுழி வாழ்வு. கசமசாவின் சுவையே தனி!

கீர்த்தானரம்பம் இவ்வாறு இருக்கும்போது, பல முதியோர்களை அணுகமாட்டேன் என்கிறாள், நித்ரா தேவி. என்ன செய்யலாம் என்ற எண்ணம் தோன்றுங்கால், ஹைடி பேயர் சொல்வதை கேட்டு பயன் அடையலாம். மிஸெளரி மாநிலத்தின் குக்கிராமம் ஒன்றில், அவர் மதபோதகர். அவ்வூரின் மையமே பாலின வன்முறை செய்த குற்றவாளிகளின் கூண்டு. பெரும்பாலோர் அங்கு ஊழியம் செய்பவர்கள். அத்தகைய பின்னணியிலும் முதியவர்களிடம் கலை ஆர்வம் வளர்க்க ஹைடி பேயர் உதவுகிறார். முதியோர் கலைக்காட்சிகளும், விழாக்களும், பரிசுகளும் அங்கு முதியோர்களின் வாழ்வில் நிறைவு கொணருகின்றன. இங்கும் சங்கீதம் இடம் பெறுவது மகிழ்ச்சி தரும் நிகழ்வுகள். 

கலையார்வம், இலக்கியார்வம், ரசனை, சிறார்களுக்கு பொருத்தமான போதனை எல்லாமே நிறைவு தந்து, இளமையை வரவழைப்பவை தான்.

Elegantly brief, this eulogy to Jeh ( as JRD Tatq is known in inner circles) is bereft of flattery, rings true and comes from a high dignitary, not given to hyperboles. The quintessential human in Jeh could not have done more or could not have asked for less.  This is a leadership quality and is also  a good neighborly attribute. For a role model, we do not have look elsewhere.

These sterling qualities come ‘made easy’ for us, thanks to Jeh’s life, as lived in. A chat with a lonesome widow, a good turn to a disabled guy, mentoring a student from a downtrodded community, a wee bit of charity, all are possible for most of us. And, there are countless other ways of reaching out to one in distress. CNRR’s tribute to Jeh implies an aspect of good governance, exemplified by the Hawthorne Experiment, which was a way of life with the Tata School of Life.

‘Caring begets duty unbound’ is the edifice on which it is built.

अङ्गुष्टमात्र: पुरुषो मध्य आत्मनि तिष्टति

ईसानां भूतभव्यस्य न ततो विजुगुप्सते ॥

அங்குஷ்ட மாத்ர: புருஷ: மத்ய ஆத்மனி திஷ்டதி

ஈஸானம் பூதபவ்யஸ்ய ந ததோ விஜுகுப்ஸதே

தெய்வத்தின் குரல் எங்கும் ஒலிக்கும். அதன் வெளிச்சமே ஒளி. திருக்கோவிலூர் ரேழியில் முதலாழ்வார்களை நெருக்கியவன், அந்த நீக்கமற நிறைந்தவனாகிய தெய்வமே. ஆங்கிலத்தில் Omnipresent, Omniscient, Omnipotent என்பார்கள் அதே கருத்தை.

இதயம் எனப்படும் பெட்டகத்தே, கட்டைவிரல் அளவு இடைவெளிக்குள் ஒடுக்கிக்கொண்டு ஆனந்தமாக உறைவதும், அவனே. 

எல்லை அறிய இயலாத  ஆகாய வெளியில் விசாலமாக  விரிந்திருப்பதும் அவனே. பரம்பொருள் என்கிறார்கள்.

அனாதி காலம் முதற்கொண்டு, என்றென்றும் காலம், நேரம், நாள், கிழமை போன்ற 

கால அளவுகளை கடந்தவனாகிய  கடவுளை உணர்ந்து கொண்டுவிட்டால், அந்த  பாகியசாலிகள் தங்களை எதிலிருந்தும் காத்துக்கொள்ள முனைவதில்லை என்பதே இந்த கடோபனிஷத்  செய்யுளின் பொருள். 

தன்னையும் 

சுற்றத்தையும் பிரித்தறியாமல் 

தன்னுள்

இருப்பதே எங்கும் இருப்பது 

என்று உணர்ந்தபின் எதனிடமிருந்து எதை காப்பாற்றுவது?

Henry van Dyke was one with Nature, thanks to his upbringing. Reputed to be one of the greatest preachers in New York, he was a born leader, who ‘energetically trampled through forest trails, fished at trout brooks, scrambled wooded mountains, and took virtual ownership of nature’.

Let us, therefore, listen to his sage advice with rapt attention. It is alright to pursue Excellence, but lesser attainments also should be given due recognition. For that, each one one of us must do what we can do as our best contribution. Henry van Dyke uses an incomparale simile. All birds sing, some like the koel sing divinely. The beautiful peacock has a grating and unpleasing voice. If we wish only for the koel’s cooing, the silent forest will hardly be welcome to us.

In sum, உன்னால் முடியும் தம்பி.

தற்புகழ்ச்சியையே தவிர்ப்பது கடினம். சுயநலத்திற்காகவோ, மரியாதை நிமித்தமாகவோ, பணிவன்புடனோ பிறர் புகழ்மாலை சாற்றினால் உச்சி குளிர்ந்துவிடும். மற்றவர் பேணுவதை நாடுவீர்கள். அதை லஜ்ஜையுடன் கையாளுவது சாலத்தகும்.

திறன் வேறு கூறின் பொறையும்:

புகழ் வரவு. இழிச்சொல்லோ பற்று (அதாவது [-]). இழிச்சொல்லை ஜீரணம் செய்வது கடினம். அது சொற்போரையோ, கைகலப்பையோ துவக்கலாம். தேவையா? பொறுத்தாள்வதே விவேகம்.

கார் ஆண்மை போல ஒழுகலும்:

பிறருக்கு மைம்மாறு செய்யும் தருணம் கிட்டினால், அதை கொடுப்பினையாக கருதாமல், கைம்மாறு எதிர்பார்ப்பதைத் தவிர்த்து, ‘பணி செய்து கிடப்பது என் கடனே’ என்ற ஆளுமை தான் நற்பயன். செருக்கு என்றால் அகந்தை என்ற பொருள் இங்கு இல்லை. அது பெருமிதத்தைக் குறிக்கிறது.

One who reads, 

writes, 

sees, 

inquires, 

lives in the company of learned, 

His intellect expands as the lotus petals expands due to the rays of sun.

Thus sayeth an entry in an Internet site.  We may note, with rapt attention, that this wise saying gathers all the attriibutes of well-behaving humanity. The simile of the blossoming lotus and the beaming sunrays is most appropriate.

You may not be able to change the world, but at least you can embarrass the guilty.

The Mitford lineage is a much-admired one. Jessica is the much younger sister of Nancy of ‘Noblesse Oblige’ fame. Jessica had won acclaim in many fields of activism. It is widely believed that, when she died in 1996, the San Francisco Chronicle wrote, "In this strangely flat era of 'diversity,' she was the rarest of birds, an exotic creature who rose each morning to become the sun around whom thousands of lives revolved."

We may therefore take her admonition seriously and shame those guilty of misdeamenors. A cause-list for those willing to fight for a cause:

1. The Bihar parents, who assisted cheating in the examinations.
2. Defenders of the rapists.
3. Granite grabbers.
4. Manalvari Mafia.
5. Aavin diluters.
6. Commonwealth game, 2G, coal Anthology

&&&& 

so many more.

As JS Mill put it,‘Eternal vigilance is the price of Liberty’.

தேம்படு பனையின் திரள்பழத் தொருவிதை

வானுற வோங்கி வளம்பெற வளரினும்

ஒருவர்க் கிருக்க நிழலா காதே.

பனங்கனி சுவை பொருந்தியதானாலும், அதனுடைய விதையானது முளை விட்டு, வளர்ந்து வானளாவ செழுமை பெற்றிருந்தாலும், அதனடியில் ஒருவர் கூட அமர்ந்து அதன் நிழலில் இளைப்பாறமுடியாது. விதை முளைத்து வளரினும் அது நிழலாகாது என்பது உருவகம் ( metaphor).

உருவத்தால் பெரியவர்கள் எல்லாரும் பெருமை உடையவர்கள் என்று கொள்ளலாகாது. அது தான் இந்த நறுந்தொகை எனப்படும் வெற்றி வேற்கை செய்யுளின் உட்கருத்து.

भवन्ति नम्रास्तरव फलोद्गमैः

नवांबुभिर्भूमिविलंबिनो घनाः

अनुद्धताः सत्पुरुषा समृद्धिभिः

स्वभाव एवैष परोपकारिणाम् ||

-अभिज्ञानशाकुन्तलम् (महाकवि कालिदास) 

Mahakavi Kalidasa, the unrivalled Dramatist, Poet and the creative writer in Samskritham, is most renowned for his deft, aesthetic and memorable similes and metaphors. They adorn his works like inlaid gems of precious stones. 

The above stanza can be translated to mean: 

Laden with fruits that become heavier by the day, the trees  stoop to conquer - to enable people to pluck and enjoy the sweet fruits.

Similiarly, the clouds pour down the rain, as they can no longer hold the weight of the water.  There are many such descriptions in Tamil literature. In his spiritual exploration, not knowing Samskritham, Kannadasan referred to the limpid eyes of the Devi as “நீருண்ட மேகக்கண்கள்”.

Kalidasa continues in the same vein:

Noble men, when fortune embraces them, do not get puffed up with vainglorius haughtiness, but use their wealth to help others.

I shall live badly if I do not write, and I shall write badly if I do not live. Françoise Sagan playwright and novelist (1935-2004). 

A contemporary creative writer, rose to international fame at age 19 when the English translation of her 1954 book - Bonjour Tristesse : Hello Sadness! reached No. 1 ranking  on the New York Times best-seller list. It was the story of a teenager accepting sexual disillushionment. It sold a million copies and has been translated in 20 languages; Her fame also dimmed somewhat, due to changing tastes.

Coming to the quote from her, it can be reasonably held that many writers dwell in their writings and that their writtings are authentic only if they reflect her/his soul.
